Hello Life Simplfifier
November is here, and with it comes a little more gathering. Maybe you have family coming for Thanksgiving, friends staying for a weekend, or kids coming home for the holidays.
This month, let’s give our guest spaces a little attention.
Guest rooms have a way of becoming the place we put things when we don’t quite know where else they belong. The donation bags, the project we’ll get back to, the things we moved out of another room. It happens! And if your guest space is also your office or your kids’ playroom, getting it ready takes a little extra thought.
Whether you have a dedicated bedroom or you’re making up the couch, a few simple steps can help the space feel comfortable and welcoming.
Start with what has collected
Before you worry about fresh sheets or the finishing touches, take a look at what’s in the space.
Put away the things that belong somewhere else, gather any donations, and let go of the things you no longer need. If you have bags ready to donate, this is a good time to actually get them out of the house.
For a room that serves more than one purpose, decide what needs to stay and contain it together. Work supplies can go in a bin, and an unfinished project can be tucked onto a shelf. You can still use the room for everyday life while making a little room for someone to stay.
Make room for their things
Think about what it feels like to arrive somewhere with an overnight bag. Where do you set it down? Where does your coat go? Is there a place for your phone and a glass of water?
Clear a spot for a suitcase, make a little space in the closet, and leave a few empty hangers. If a dresser is available, opening up one drawer is helpful, too.
You don’t need to empty the entire room. A clear surface and somewhere to unpack a few things can make a big difference.
Refresh the basics
Wash the bedding and check that you have clean towels ready. Take a look at the pillows and set an extra blanket somewhere easy to find.
If you’re using an air mattress or pullout couch, get it out ahead of time. Make sure everything works and that you know where the sheets are. It’s much easier to figure that out before everyone is tired and ready for bed.
This is also a good time to give the room a quick dust and vacuum.
Think through the little things
Walk through the space as if you were staying there.
Can you reach a lamp from the bed? Is there an accessible outlet for a charger? Is there somewhere to put a bag without blocking the walkway?
A small trash can, the Wi-Fi password, and an easy place to find an extra blanket are all helpful. Use what you already have. A chair can hold a bag, and a small table can work beside the bed.
Before buying anything, ask yourself what would actually make the stay easier.
Give the bathroom a quick reset
Clear a little counter space and make sure there’s hand soap, toilet paper, and a place to hang a towel.
Set clean towels somewhere obvious and make extra toilet paper easy to find. If you have a few spare toiletries, you can gather them in a small basket or drawer.
Especially in a shared bathroom, a little space for your guest’s things goes a long way.
Make it easy to reset again
Once you’ve gathered what you need, keep guest bedding and towels together so they’re easy to find next time. You might also keep a short note of what needs to happen before someone arrives.
Having a simple system means getting ready for the next visit takes a little less time and thought.
Your home can still look like people live there. There may be toys in the living room, laundry going, and an office tucked into the guest bedroom. You can welcome people right into that life.
This month, set aside a little time to clear some space, freshen the basics, and think about what would help someone feel at home.
And if your guest room has become a catchall and you’re having a hard time getting started, I’d love to help you make it useful again.
Warmly,
Sarah
