back to school, back to you. Organizing routines for busy fall days

September always feels like a whirlwind — new schedules, late sports nights, and the challenge of keeping everything running smoothly. The key? Simple routines that take the stress out of busy days. Tips from a professional mom and organizer :)

busy does not equal bad, but it does require some support.

I often can get overwhelmed by all the business fall brings. Sports schedules, upcoming holiday season, and the transition into new schedules. I wanted to share my favorite tips and tricks to support this season.

Evening Reset: I like to call this my closing shift. You would not leave a co-worker a busy kitchen in the morning so why would you leave it for yourself? My closing shift is anywhere from 10-30 minutes depending on demand and my energy level (ha!)

  • Kitchen: Dishes, counter wipe down

  • Entry way / Drop zone: backpacks cleaned out and ready for tomorrow

  • Clothes laid out: My son lays his own out every night, and I try to follow his example.

  • Living Room: Pillows back on the couch, blankets folded and curtains closed.

Sunday Reset: This is time I hold sacred. Again, life and schedule depending… being flexible is key here! This can take anywhere from 1 hour - as long as I need/want.

  • Meal Prep: my nutrition is all over the place if I do not do this, I am not a lover of cooking during busy seasons.

  • Laundry done and put away (I like to pair laundry with watching or listening to something that gets you excited. In this season it is football for me. Maybe a favorite podcast or just dancing around to some 90s hip hop?)

  • Backpack and Sports Gear: is everything clean and cleaned out for the week ahead

  • Planning: I love my Sunday planning time, I could (and should) write an entire blog post about this topic. I sit down before church with my planner, hot chai, and map out my week. It is truly so helpful for my ADHD brain to get all of that on to paper.

  • Chores: This is when the kids and I divide up house chores and get the house cleaned up. If you want more about how we do this please shoot me a message, I am happy to share!

  • Self care: the reward for all my work. Whether this is a hot bath, indulging in a cozy hobby, or a big family dinner it is what self care looks and feels like for you!

Routines are usually the answer when it comes to maintaining your organization. Not fun, but SOOOO beneficial! It takes time to create your perfect routine. It does not, and will not be perfect. It’s about consistency, not perfection. Every action in the right direction is enough. You got this!

Choose Simple,

Sarah
